How to play
Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.
Here is an overview of how to play based on the rules provided:
Setup
- Give each player a reference card and a fame card (p. 5).
- Give each player a starting deck of six cards (2 mosquitoes, 1 spider, 1 grasshopper, 1 ladybug, and 1 firefly), leaving space for dismissed cards (p. 5). All starting cards are gray and have a rank of 0 (p. 5).
- Place the five price cards in the center of the table in ascending order from left to right (p. 5). For 1–2 players, place the 3 and 15 price cards with the specified side face up (p. 5).
- Shuffle the toon cards face down to create the toon deck (p. 5).
- Reveal the top five cards from the toon deck to form the market, sorting them by rank under each price card from lowest (left) to highest (right) (p. 5).
- Place the critic’s choice card face up near the toon deck, and give the first player card to the player who most recently watched a cartoon (p. 5).
How a Round Works
Play proceeds over a series of rounds (p. 6), with each round divided into four phases:
- Flip: Players shuffle their decks simultaneously and reveal cards one at a time into a 3-by-2 grid from left to right (top row then bottom row) (p. 11). Card abilities that trigger upon placement or when hired/dismissed resolve during or immediately after this phase (p. 11, 19).
- Check Fame: All players simultaneously review the toons in their grid to calculate their total generated fame and mark it on their fame card (p. 6).
- Market: Starting with the first player and going clockwise, players spend their calculated fame to perform up to two actions (p. 8, 20):
- Hire a Toon: Take a toon card from the market by paying the fame cost shown on the price card above it, then add it to your deck (p. 20).
- Dismiss a Toon: Remove a toon card from your revealed grid for 5 fame, placing it face up next to your deck (p. 20). After a player finishes their actions, the market is refilled back to five cards and rearranged by rank (p. 16).
- Cleanup: Players collect all the cards in their grid and add them back to their deck (p. 7). Unless the end of the game has been triggered, the first player card passes clockwise and a new round begins (p. 7).
How the Game Ends
- The end of the game is triggered during the Check Fame phase if any player generates at least 30 fame (p. 6, 7).
- When this happens, the player with the most fame takes the critic's choice card (which grants an extra +3 fame), provided there is no tie for the most fame (p. 6).
- All players then complete one final Flip and Check Fame phase (p. 7).
- The player who generates the most fame on this Final Flip wins the game (p. 7). Ties are resolved by having the tied players shuffle their decks and repeat a Flip and Check Fame cycle until a single winner emerges (p. 7).
