How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Here is a general overview of how to play the game:

Setup

  • Place the Action board in the central area along with common component pools, and place all 4 Lock tokens near its left side (p. 3).
  • Place the stack of Debt cards, the shuffled Network cards, the 3 face-down Script Part stacks, the Genki Staff decks, and the Trend cards with the Trend board nearby (p. 3).
  • Give each player a Studio board, 6 matching Studio Action tokens, 2 Point trackers set to 0, 4 Dead-Inside Staff cards (with 1 Studio Action token on each and 2 in reserve), and a starting token (p. 4).
  • Distribute starting money to each player based on player order (1st player gets 3, 2nd gets 4, 3rd gets 5, 4th gets 6), give each player a Player Aid card, and optionally give each player a Debt card (p. 4).

How a Round and Turn Work

The game is played over 4 rounds, and each round consists of the following three phases (p. 5):

  1. Production Phase:
    • Starting with the first player and going clockwise, players take turns moving one available Staff card's Studio Action token to an action space on the board to perform an action (p. 5).
    • This continues until all players have no more available Staff (p. 5).
  2. Release Phase:
    • Players may release one anime each and gain the rewards for it (p. 5).
    • Releasing an anime activates Merchandise Deals and allows players to score Opportunity cards (p. 5).
  3. Upkeep Phase:
    • Players complete a series of steps in order, which includes gaining rewards from their rightmost active merchandise token, optionally paying off Debt cards, raising the interest on Debt cards, and paying staff salaries (p. 11).
    • Additional upkeep steps include recovering all Studio Action tokens onto staff cards, refilling the Genki Staff common pool, resetting Strategize leverages, and flipping the leftmost face-down Opportunity card face-up (p. 11).

How the Game Ends

  • The game ends at the end of the 4th round's Upkeep Phase (p. 12).
  • Whoever has the most Reputation points wins (p. 12).
