How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Here is a general overview of how to play based on the provided rules.

Setup

To set up the game, follow these steps:

  • Take all Starting Equipment cards and deal them randomly and as evenly as possible among the Survivors (p. 24).
  • Place the miniatures representing the chosen Survivors in the Survivor Starting Zone(s) indicated by the Mission (p. 24).
  • Each player places their Survivors' Dashboards in front of them with the sliding arrow on the 0 space in the blue area of the Danger Bar, placing trackers in the Wound Bar, the first Blue Skill, and the reserve slots (p. 24).

How a Turn (Game Round) Works

The game is played over a series of Game Rounds (p. 8), each structured into phases:

  • Player Phase: The player with the First Player token takes their turn first, activating their Survivors one at a time in any order of their choice (p. 2). Each Survivor can initially perform 3 actions per turn (p. 8). Once a player finishes activating all their survivors, the player to their left takes their turn (p. 8). Play proceeds clockwise until all players have completed their turns (p. 8, 6). Available actions include moving, searching, opening doors, reorganizing or trading inventory, performing combat actions, taking or activating an objective, making noise, or doing nothing (p. 6).
  • Zombie Phase: After all players finish their turns, all zombies on the board activate and spend 1 action to either attack a survivor in their zone or move towards the survivors (p. 8). Runners get 2 actions and can perform combinations of attacks and moves (p. 8, 20). Once all zombies finish their actions, new zombies appear in all active spawn zones on the board (p. 8).
  • End Phase: All noise tokens are removed from the board, and the first player passes the First Player token to the player on their left before a new game round begins (p. 8).

How the Game Ends

  • The game is won immediately when all of the Mission objectives have been accomplished (p. 8). Because Zombicide is a cooperative game, all players win together (p. 8).
  • The game is lost whenever a Survivor is eliminated, when the Mission objectives can no longer be fulfilled, or when a specified losing condition is met (p. 8). All players lose together (p. 8).
