How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Setup

  • Place 4 different piles face up on the board for Spoon, Knife, Pickaxe, and Shovel cards (p. 3). For every Gang, shuffle and place its Gang cards as a pile on its designated board location (p. 3).
  • Shuffle all Search cards to form a face-down deck on the board, with a discard pile next to it (p. 3). Place Cigarette and Beating tokens within reach (p. 3).
  • Each player chooses a prisoner standee, places the corresponding prisoner board in front of them, and puts their standee on the Cell Block (p. 3).
  • Each player draws a hidden Background card and keeps it secret, though they can look at it at any time (p. 3). Each player also draws 3 Search cards as a starting hand (p. 3).
  • The player with the most impressive scar becomes the first player (p. 4).

How a Turn Works

  • Players take turns clockwise starting from the first player (p. 4). When it is your turn, you can perform up to 2 actions (p. 4).
  • Actions are divided into basic actions (which can be performed in different places) and place actions (which require you to be in a specific place) (p. 4). In addition to your 2 actions, you can reveal your Background card and use abilities granted by any Gang you joined (p. 4).
  • Basic actions include moving, searching, extorting other players, and playing an action card (p. 4, 5, 7, 9):
    • Move: You can make a Simple move by rolling the die to choose between 2 indicated places, or a Cautious move by spending 2 actions to move anywhere without rolling (p. 5).
    • Search: Draw the number of Search cards indicated by your current place, keeping in mind you cannot hold more than 10 cards in hand at the end of your turn (p. 5).
    • Extortion: Target another player in your place by playing a Weapon card to demand a Tool (p. 7). If they do not cooperate, a combat starts where players take turns playing Weapon cards until someone loses and takes a Beating (p. 7).
  • Place actions require you to be in the correct location and include (p. 9, 18):
    • Dig: Located in the Cell Block, allowing you to place a Tool card from your hand next to your board to immediately score Tunnel points (p. 18).
    • Craft: Combine cards to create items, provided you are not in the Cell Block or Showers and have no Beatings (p. 17).
    • Sell and Buy: Located in the Recreational Area to trade cards and Cigarette tokens (p. 18).
    • Heal: Located in the Infirmary to remove a Beating (p. 18).
    • Steal a Spoon: Located in the Cafeteria to take a spoon card (p. 18, 20).

How the Game Ends

  • As soon as a player reaches the necessary number of Tunnel points, that player wins and the game ends (p. 4). The required Tunnel points depend on the player count: 12 points for 2-3 players, 10 points for 4 players, and 8 points for 5-6 players (p. 4).
