How to play
Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.
Here is an overview of how to play Kingdom Crossing.
Setup
- Place the main board at the center of the table with the Tree board next to it (p. 20).
- Sort the Character and Structure cards by their backs to form 10 face-down piles, placing one pile on each of the 10 corresponding slots on the main board and revealing the top card of each deck (p. 20).
- Place Bird tokens face down in their respective regional spaces on the main board (p. 20). Form a face-down pile with the Queen cards on the Tree board (after returning one to the box) and place the Bridge goal tiles on the Tree board (p. 20).
- Shuffle the Favor of the Queen tiles into 3 face-down piles, revealing one from each pile (p. 2). Place Flower and Sculpture tokens and the unlimited coin supply nearby (p. 22).
- Each player takes a player board, a Worker, Houses, Paw markers, Bridge goal markers, an Investment marker, a Score marker, a Home card, Action tiles, and Resource markers (p. 23).
- Players place their Action tiles, resource markers, Investment marker, Score marker, and Home card on their designated starting spaces, and keep their Worker and one House aside (p. 23).
- Players choose a pair of Starting cards and Favors of the Queen in reverse turn order, placing the Favor of the Queen next to their player board (p. 16).
How a Round Works
The game is played over 4 rounds, and each round consists of 3 phases (p. 6):
- 1) Morning phase: In turn order, players collect their Income (A), birds arrive in the forest (B), and the Queen awakes by revealing a new Queen card (p. 6).
- 2) Noon phase: In turn order, each player selects one Action tile from the left of their player board and resolves it by choosing to Rest or Work (p. 6, 20).
- Rest: Move the tile to the right of your player board and gain the coins indicated in its Rest section (p. 20).
- Work: Move the tile to the right of your player board and activate it, usually making your Worker cross a specific number of uncrossed bridges while placing Paw markers as a reminder (p. 20). You then choose a card in your arrival region, resolve any bird bonus if present, and purchase the card by spending coins to place it on your player board (p. 20).
- The Noon phase ends when every player has played 4 Action tiles (p. 6).
- 3) Evening phase: In turn order, if your Worker ends the round in a region with one of your Houses, you choose one Income to collect, then take back your 4 Action tiles and your Paw markers (p. 20).
How the Game Ends
The game ends after the 4th round finishes (p. 13). Players spend their unused coins by moving one space on the investment track for every 5 coins spent, and then calculate their final score by adding various end-game victory points (p. 13).
- End-game scoring includes points from the Investment track, Guild Cards, Structures, and Favors of the Queen (p. 13).
- The player with the most victory points wins the game, with ties broken by the most remaining coins (p. 13).
