How to play
Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.
In Tend, players take on the role of pioneers working for the Zenith corporation to build farms and collect goods on a new alien world (p. 10). It is a flip-and-write game where all players use a shared deck of task cards simultaneously across 12 rounds (p. 10, 13).
Setup
- Shuffle all neighbor cards to form a deck, and shuffle objective cards for seasons 1, 2, and 3, placing one of each face-up in order (p. 15).
- Create the season task card decks by setting up task cards from each season, and shuffle the starter task cards to form the main task deck (p. 15).
- Draw the top 5 cards of the task deck and place them face up in a row, then sort all dice into a general supply accessible to everyone (p. 16).
- Each player collects their personal components, including a cargo sheet, 6 color pencils, a farm sheet, a mine and woods scratch-off card (or web app), a metal coin, a corporate commissary market board, a guide card, fishing and geode cards with rolling dice, and 2 neighbor cards (p. 16).
Round Structure & Turn Flow
Each of the 12 rounds consists of 5 phases performed in the following order (p. 13):
- Neighbor Phase: Players gain resources from neighbor cards gifted to them, discard those cards, and draw new ones to replace any they gave away (p. 13). (Note: Skip this phase for the first round of the game) (p. 13).
- Scoring Phase: Players calculate victory points based on the objective card for the season that just ended (p. 14). This occurs at the beginning of rounds 6 and 10, and at the end of the game (p. 14).
- Setup Phase: Clear previous task cards, draw 3 new task cards into a row, reveal upcoming season deck cards, and prepare new choices (p. 14). (Note: Skip this phase for the first round of the game) (p. 14).
- Growth Phase: Players rotate all crop and animal dice once to advance their values, harvesting any resources whose dice tick up to reveal a white symbol (p. 12).
- Task Phase: Players simultaneously choose 2 of the available task cards from the shared row to resolve independently (p. 12). Task cards let players perform actions such as tending farms, chopping wood, mining, and fishing to collect resources (p. 12, 19, 21).
When you gain a resource, you must use it immediately without storing it, by choosing one of 4 ways: spending it directly on your sheets, selling it to the corporate commissary for coins, placing it into your cargo manifest, or gifting it to a neighbor (p. 3).
End of Game
At the end of the 12th round, perform one additional neighbor phase, score the season 3 objective card, and then move on to final scoring (p. 23). Players record and total their points from cargo manifests, neighbor bonuses, and badges (p. 23).
(Note: While the rules state that the player with the most victory points in the "TOTAL" box wins (p. 12), the complete core winning condition details and exact breakdown mechanics across all categories are only partially present in the provided text.)
