How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Here is a general overview of how to play Everdell based on the provided rules.

Setup

  1. Place the board on the table and put the Ever Tree on the stump at the top of the board (p. 22).
  2. Place the twigs, resin, pebbles, and berries in supply piles along the river, and place the point tokens and occupied tokens beside the board (p. 22).
  3. Shuffle the Forest cards and place them on the forest clearings (use 3 cards for 2 players, or 4 cards for 3 or 4 players) (p. 22).
  4. Place the 4 basic Event tiles along the river, shuffle the special Event cards, and place 4 special Events on the lower branches of the Ever Tree (p. 22).
  5. Shuffle the main deck, place it inside the Ever Tree, and randomly place 8 cards faceup in the Meadow (p. 23).
  6. Each player chooses a color, starts with 2 workers of that color, and places their 4 other workers on the upper branches of the Ever Tree (1 on spring, 1 on summer, and 2 on autumn) (p. 23).
  7. The first player draws 5 cards, the second draws 6, the third draws 7, and the fourth draws 8 (p. 23). The most humble player goes first (p. 23).

How a Turn Works

Play proceeds clockwise, and on your turn, you take only one of the following three actions (p. 2, 8):

  • Place a Worker: Deploy one of your workers to an exclusive or shared location on the board, in a city, or on an Event to immediately gather resources, draw cards, host events, or perform other location actions (p. 8, 16). Workers remain deployed until brought back during a Prepare for Season action (p. 8).
  • Play a Card: Play one card either from your hand or from the faceup Meadow cards by paying its listed resource cost into the general supply (p. 10, 13). Cards are played into your woodland city, which has a maximum limit of 15 spaces (p. 10, 12, 13).
  • Prepare for Season: If you have placed all of your workers and cannot or do not wish to play a card, you must prepare for the next season (p. 12). Bring back all of your deployed workers, gain the listed bonuses for the next season from atop the Ever Tree, and activate all green Production cards in your city (p. 12, 13).

How the Game End Works

The game ends when you have reached the end of autumn and cannot perform any more actions (or do not wish to), at which point you must pass (p. 14). Once all players have passed, players add up all their points to determine the winner (p. 28).

Ties are broken first by the player who achieved the most Events, and then by the player with the most leftover resources (p. 28).
