How to play
Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.
Here is how to play the game, based on the provided rules.
Setup
- Assemble the game board and place it in the center of the play area (p. 12). Construct the Action Wheel with its outer ring and inner wheel depending on player count, shuffle and place the Action tiles, and set up the Region tiles, Railway Bonus tokens, and Goal tiles (p. 12).
- Shuffle the Improvement cards to form a deck, draw the specified number for your player count (6 for 2 players, 7 for 3 players, 8 for 4 players) to form a face-up display, and keep general supply components (resources, coins, tools, coal, oil barrels, assistants, managers, score tokens) within easy reach (p. 6, 18).
- Each player chooses a color, takes a player board, arranges their Drill tiles, places their 6 Offices, stacks their Refinery tiles, arranges their Briefcase tiles, and keeps their Extra Action tiles and Turbine tiles nearby (p. 6).
- Randomly determine the initial turn order and place markers on the Victory Points track and Progress track (p. 6). The last player in turn order chooses character notebooks for players to select from, and each player receives starting resources (1 tool, 1 coal, 1 coin, with extra bonuses depending on turn order) along with their Train and Engineer (p. 6, 10, 22).
- Before round one begins, players in reverse turn order place their Train and Engineer in Plains Regions and collect those Railway Bonuses (p. 16).
Game Flow and Rounds
- A game lasts 4 Rounds (p. 15). Each round is divided into 6 Phases that must be carried out in this exact order (p. 15):
- Income: Each player receives what is indicated inside the blue band of their Character sheet (p. 15).
- Actions: Following the turn order, players take three turns placing one Worker at a time on the Action Wheel (p. 15). Using an Assistant resolves 1 Action tile, while using a Manager lets you use connected Action tiles (p. 15, 21).
- Oil Extraction: Each player receives the Oil Barrels produced by their extraction wells (yellow for low quality, green for good quality, blue for excellent quality), which depend on the depth reached by each well (p. 9).
- Oil Refining: Players use their produced Oil Barrels to activate built Refineries, potentially boosted by adjacent Turbines, to gain resources, patents, progress, and victory points (p. 9).
- Goals: Victory points are awarded depending on how well the Goal of the current round is satisfied (p. 15).
- End of Round: Workers are removed from the wheel, the wheel clicks to rotate, the Improvement card display is replenished, and the turn order is updated in reverse order based on positions on the Progress Track (p. 19). Players can keep a maximum of 1 Oil Barrel per color (p. 2).
End of the Game
- At the end of the fourth round, bonus victory points are awarded for things like extraction well depths, Refineries (no. 7 onwards) flanked by Turbines, built Offices, progress track positions, Structures, leftover patents, and leftover resources (p. 15, 29).
- The player with the most victory points wins (p. 15, 29).
