How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Here is a general overview of how to play Grand Austria Hotel:

Setup

  1. Place the main game board and action board in the middle of the table, sorting dishes, drinks, Room tiles, Staff cards, Guest cards, Politics cards, and Emperor tiles onto their respective spaces (p. 4, 6).
  2. Each player takes a Hotel board, an Overview card, 6 wooden disks of their chosen color, and Turn Order tiles based on the player count (p. 6). Place your wooden disks on the Emperor track ("0"), Victory Point track ("0"), and Money track ("10"), and place one starting dish/drink of each type in your Kitchen (p. 6, 21).
  3. Place dice on the first Action space depending on player count (10 dice for 2 players, 12 for 3 players, 14 for 4 players) and set the Round marker to round 1 (p. 6, 21).
  4. Each player draws 6 Staff cards into their hand (p. 21). In reverse turn order, players each choose one guest from the board to place in their Café, and then prepare up to 3 rooms on their Hotel board by paying their costs (p. 20).

How a Turn Works

The game is played over 7 rounds, with the start player rolling all dice at the start of each round and sorting them onto the 6 Action spaces (p. 2, 7). On your turn, you must take one mandatory action, and you may also take one optional action and additional actions (p. 7, 23):

  • Mandatory Action: Take a die from an Action space and carry out its corresponding action (p. 7). The number of dice currently on that space determines the strength of the action (p. 7). Afterward, remove that die and place it on your Turn Order tile (p. 7).
  • Optional Action: Take a guest from the game board and place them into an empty space in your Café by paying their printed cost (p. 7, 9).
  • Additional Actions: During your turn, you can also perform extra actions such as paying 1 krone to add +1 to a chosen action's die count, moving up to 3 dishes and drinks from your Kitchen to your Guest cards, placing a wooden disk on a qualifying Politics card, using a "once per round" staff effect, or moving a completed guest to a matching room (p. 23).

Instead of taking a turn, you may choose to pass, waiting until all other players have passed or finished their turns before the remaining dice are re-rolled (p. 17).

How the Game End and Scoring Works

The game ends after the 7th round, which is followed by a Final Scoring alongside the round 7 Emperor Scoring (p. 2, 11). During the Final Scoring:

  • You receive Victory Points for Staff cards that provide end-game points, for occupied rooms based on their row (1 VP for row 1, up to 4 VP for the top row), and 1 VP for each leftover krone, dish, and drink in your Kitchen (p. 11).
  • You lose 5 Victory Points for each guest left sitting in your Café (p. 11).
  • The player with the most Victory Points wins, with ties broken by whoever has the most leftover dishes, drinks, and krones (p. 11).
