How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Here is how you set up and play the game.

Setup

  • Shuffle the Region cards and deal 3 face-down to each player, who look at their cards without revealing them (p. 6).
  • Place the Region deck in the center of the table and reveal as many cards from it as there are players, plus one (p. 6).
  • Shuffle the Sanctuary cards into a face-down deck and place it beside the Region deck (p. 6).

How a Round and Turn Work

A game lasts 8 rounds, and each round consists of three phases (p. 5).

  1. Exploring a Region: All players simultaneously choose a card from their hand and place it face down in front of them, then reveal them together and add them to their play area to the right of previously played cards (p. 5).
  2. Finding Sanctuaries: Players who played a card with an exploration duration higher than the Region card they previously played will find a Sanctuary (p. 6). Players receive one Sanctuary card, plus an extra one for each clue they possess on their cards (p. 5).
  3. End of the Exploration: Players act one after another in this phase, starting from the lowest exploration duration played in phase one and moving upwards (p. 6). On your turn, you first choose a Region card from the center of the table to add to your hand, then choose one Sanctuary card (if you received any) to add to your play area while returning any leftovers to the bottom of the deck (p. 5).

How the Game Ends

The game ends after the 8th round, when everyone has 8 Region cards in their play area (p. 3). Players flip their Region cards face down and reveal them one by one from right to left, calculating fame based on face-up Regions and Sanctuaries (p. 3). The player with the highest total fame wins the game, with ties broken by the tied player who has the lowest exploration duration in their tableau (p. 3).
