How to play
Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.
Here is a general overview of how to play the game:
Setup
- Global Setup: Place the island board in the center of the play area and put the Oshax figure on the top left space of the island (p. 4). Shuffle the discovery cards into a face-down pile to the left of the island, place the treasure tiles below them, draw three cat tiles from the discovery bag to place to the right of the island board, and put the fish tokens and discovery bag nearby (p. 4).
- Player Setup: Each player receives a boat board and 3 fish tokens (p. 4). Randomly decide who goes first, and then each player chooses which side of their boat board they wish to use (p. 4).
- Day Setup: The game is played over 4 days (rounds) (p. 9). At the start of each day, fill the island by randomly drawing 10 cat tiles onto the cat spaces and 5 discovery cards onto the card spaces (p. 9).
How a Turn Works
- Movement Action: At the start of your turn, you must move the Oshax figure exactly two spaces to any adjacent space without moving back to a space already visited this turn (p. 11).
- Optional Actions: After completing your movement, you may perform one selection action and any number of fish actions you can afford (p. 10, 11).
- Selection Action: Select one discovery (cat tile or card) that the Oshax touched, started on, or finished on, and immediately resolve it by placing cats/treasures onto your boat or resolving cards (p. 6).
- Fish Actions: You can spend fish to perform extra actions, such as spending one fish to move an extra space, two fish to jump anywhere, two fish to take one treasure, or three fish to choose one extra discovery (p. 17).
- End of Turn: A turn ends by checking if the island is empty or if selection actions were skipped on consecutive turns, which can lead to clearing the island and starting the next round or ending the game (p. 11).
How the Game Ends
- The game immediately ends during the clear the island phase if there are no cat tiles by the side of the island to select (p. 11).
- At the end of the game, players earn points for cat families and completed lessons, while losing points for visible rats and unfilled rooms on their boats, and the player with the most points wins (p. 5).
