How to play
Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.
Welcome to Point Salad, a card-drafting and tableau-building game for 2 to 6 players where you collect point cards and veggies to build the ultimate salad (p. 3). Here is how you set up, play, and finish a game.
Setup
- Depending on your player count, count out or remove specific amounts of each of the 6 veggie cards from the game without looking at their point card backs, returning removed cards to the box (p. 4):
- 2 Players: Count out 6 of each veggie (36 total) (p. 4).
- 3 Players: Count out 9 of each veggie (54 total) (p. 4).
- 4 Players: Remove 6 of each veggie (72 total) (p. 4).
- 5 Players: Remove 3 of each veggie (90 total) (p. 4).
- 6 Players: Use the entire deck (p. 4).
- Shuffle all remaining cards and create three roughly equal draw piles with their point card sides facing up (p. 4).
- Flip over two cards from each draw pile and place them in a column below each pile to create the veggie market (p. 4).
- Randomly choose a start player to begin (p. 4).
How a Turn Works
On your turn, you draft one or more cards to add to a face-up tableau in front of yourself (p. 5). You may choose one of the following drafting options (p. 5):
- Draft one point card from the top of any of the draw piles (p. 5).
- Draft two veggie cards from those available in the market (p. 5).
Once per turn, you also have an optional free action: you may choose to flip over any one of your point cards (either drafted this turn or on a previous turn) and turn it into a veggie card (p. 5). Note that you cannot flip a veggie card into a point card (p. 5).
After you select your cards and add them to your tableau, you must refill the veggie market by drawing cards from the corresponding draw piles in each column to fill any empty slots, flipping them from the point side to the veggie side as they enter the market (p. 6). If a draw pile of point cards runs out, split the largest pile roughly in half and move the bottom half to replace the empty pile, making sure the top point card of the largest pile does not move (p. 6). Play then continues with the next player to the left (p. 6).
How the Game Ends
The game ends when all cards from both the point card piles and the veggie market have been drafted (p. 6). Players tabulate their victory points by counting how many points each of their point cards are worth and adding these scores together, with a player's full tableau of veggie cards considered for each point card (p. 6). The player with the most points is the winner, and if two players tie, the player who played later in the turn order wins (p. 6).
