How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Here is a general overview of how to play based on the rules provided.

Setup

  • Shuffle each Development card deck separately and place them facedown in a column in the middle of the table in increasing order from bottom to top (p. 5).
  • Reveal 4 cards from each level deck, placing them in a row to the right of their respective decks (p. 5).
  • Shuffle the Noble tiles, reveal 5 of them in a row above the cards, and return the remaining Noble tiles to the box (p. 8).
  • Sort the gem pieces and Gold pieces by color to form the supply within reach of all players (p. 8). For example, in a 4-player game, there are 7 pieces of each gem color and 5 Gold pieces (p. 10).
  • The youngest player takes the First Player marker to begin (p. 8).

How a Turn Works

The player with the First Player marker takes the first turn, and play then proceeds clockwise (p. 3). On your turn, you must perform exactly 1 of the following four actions (p. 3):

  • Take 3 Gem pieces of different colors: If there are not enough available pieces to take 3 of different colors, you may take 2 or even 1, but you can never take a Gold piece with this action (p. 3).
  • Take 2 Gem pieces of the same color: This action is only available if there are at least 4 pieces available in that color in the supply before you take them, and you can never take Gold pieces with this action (p. 3).
  • Reserve 1 Development card and take 1 Gold piece: Take a faceup card from the middle of the table or draw the top card from one of the three decks facedown, and take a Gold piece (p. 3). Reserved cards are kept in your hand (you cannot have more than 3 reserved cards at a time) (p. 5).
  • Purchase 1 Development card: Buy 1 of the faceup cards from the middle of the table or 1 of your reserved cards by spending the required pieces indicated on the card (p. 5).

After purchasing or reserving a card from the middle of the table, replace it by drawing the top card from the corresponding deck so that there are always 4 faceup cards of each level (unless the deck is depleted) (p. 7).

At the end of your turn, check if you meet the swaying requirements for acquiring a Noble tile based on the bonuses on your purchased Development cards (p. 2). If you qualify, you take 1 Noble tile and place it in your play area (p. 2).

Finally, check your piece pool: if you have more than 10 pieces at the end of your turn, you must return excess pieces of your choice to the supply until you have 10 (p. 7).

How the Game Ends

The end of the game is triggered as soon as a player reaches 15 or more Prestige points at the end of their turn (p. 1). When this happens, continue playing until all players have had the same number of turns, with the player to the right of the First Player taking the final turn of the game (p. 1).

The player with the most Prestige points wins (p. 1). If there is a tie, the tied player who purchased the fewest Development cards wins; if it is still tied, those players share the victory (p. 1).
