How to play
Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.
Here is how to play the game, broken down into setup, how a turn works, and how the round and game phases unfold:
Game Setup
- Give each player a player board and flip it to the colored wall side (or use the gray variant side if agreed upon) (p. 2). Place 1 scoring marker on space "0" of your score track (p. 2).
- Place the Factory displays in a circle around the center of the table based on the player count: 5 displays for 2 players, 7 displays for 3 players, or 9 displays for 4 players (p. 2).
- Fill the bag with all 100 tiles (20 of each of the 5 colors) (p. 2).
- The player who most recently visited Portugal takes the starting player marker and randomly draws 4 tiles from the bag to fill each Factory display (p. 2).
How a Turn Works The game is played over multiple rounds, each composed of three phases: Factory offer, Wall-tiling, and Preparing the next round (p. 3). During the Factory offer phase, the starting player goes first, and play continues clockwise (p. 3). On your turn, you must pick tiles in one of two ways (p. 3):
- Pick all tiles of the same color from any one Factory display, then move the remaining tiles from that display to the center of the table (p. 3).
- Pick all tiles of the same color from the center of the table (p. 3). If you are the first player this round to do this, also take the starting player marker and place it on the leftmost free space of your floor line (p. 3).
After picking tiles, you must add them to one of the 5 pattern lines on your player board, placing them from right to left (p. 3). Any tiles you cannot or do not want to place legally must go into your floor line, which results in minus points later (p. 4). This phase ends when the center of the table and all Factory displays have no more tiles left (p. 4).
Next is the Wall-tiling phase, where players simultaneously move the rightmost tile of each complete pattern line onto the matching color space on their wall to score points immediately (p. 4, 5). Any remaining tiles in pattern lines that no longer have a tile in the rightmost space are cleared into the game box lid (p. 4). Afterward, players lose points for any tiles (and the starting player marker) currently sitting in their floor line, and those floor tiles are also cleared into the lid (p. 5).
How the Game Ends The game ends right after the Wall-tiling phase in which at least one player has completed at least one horizontal line of 5 consecutive tiles on their wall (p. 3, 6). Once the game ends, players score additional bonus points for complete horizontal lines, complete vertical lines, and sets of all 5 tiles of a single color placed on their wall (p. 6). The player with the most points on the score track wins the game (p. 6).
