How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Here is a general overview of how to play the game, based on the provided rules.

Setup

  1. Place the main board in the middle of the table (using the side corresponding to your player count) and place resource tokens (koku, wood, and influence), battle dice, battle tracking tokens, and the battle board nearby (p. 6).
  2. Set up mercenary hero cards and standees, the Toshi Ranbo tile with its expand upgrade tile, watchtower tiles, shrine tiles with upgrade tiles, and village tokens on their designated main board locations (p. 6).
  3. Create the order deck based on your player count and deal 5 faceup order cards onto the main board's order row (p. 6).
  4. Randomly choose a first player (p. 8). Proceeding clockwise, each player chooses a clan and takes their clan board, 15 troops, 3 hero standees, 2 building tiles, 7 achievement markers, 1 fort tile, and 12 clan-specific cards (p. 8).
  5. Place your clan board in front of you, place your fort tile on the closest fort location on the main board, and place your starting resources and initial troops on your fort tile according to your player turn order (p. 8).
  6. Finally, shuffle the neutral tactics cards, deal 2 facedown to each player, and return the rest to the box (p. 21).

How a Turn Works

Play begins with the first player and proceeds clockwise (p. 11). On your turn, follow these 5 steps in order:

  • 1. Choose an Order Card: Choose any faceup order card from the order row, paying any required resource costs (p. 11).
  • 2. Place the Order Card: Place the chosen card either faceup above your clan board at the top of the matching color column to activate that column, or facedown on top of a noble action spot at the bottom of your clan board while paying the influence needed for a noble action (p. 11).
  • 3a. Activate a Column OR 3b. Take a Noble Action: If you placed the card in a column, activate that column from top to bottom, starting with the newly placed order card and including any printed actions on your clan board in that column (p. 20). Alternatively, perform your chosen noble action (p. 5).
  • 4. Resolve Battle: If movement or actions triggered a battle, resolve it now (p. 5). Players roll, reroll, and keep battle dice based on their strength (strength), kills (kills), and defense (defense), then resolve kills and determine a winner (p. 13, 19).
  • 5. End of Turn: Resolve end-of-turn effects such as collecting village tokens, claiming shrines, and claiming Toshi Ranbo (p. 22). If you have fewer than 3 troops on the main board, place troops in your fort until you have 3, then add new cards to the order card row until it has 5 faceup cards (p. 22).

How the Game Ends

The first clan to complete 7 achievements wins the game (p. 10). If two players reach 7 achievements at the same time, the player whose turn it is wins the game (p. 15).
