How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Here is an overview of how to set up, play, and end a game of Wayfarers of the South Tigris:

Setup

  1. Place the 3 Main Board Sections together in the middle of the play area (p. 15).
  2. Shuffle the Townsfolk, Space, Land, Water, and Inspiration Cards into separate decks and place them facedown as draw piles, then draw the top 4 cards of each deck to place faceup next to them (p. 15).
  3. Shuffle the Journal Tiles and place 1 faceup onto each empty space of the Journal Track, and place 1 Green Worker onto each designated space along the middle of the track (p. 15).
  4. Place all 10 Special Upgrade Tiles and the required basic/coloured Upgrade Tiles onto their spaces on the Main Board (p. 15).
  5. Give each player 1 randomly dealt Player Board, 5 Dice (2 in reserve near the minarets, 3 rolled and placed by their board), 15 Influence, 1 Player Marker placed on the far-left of the Main Board, 1 Yellow Worker, and 1 Blue Worker (p. 5).
  6. Place Silver and Provisions in a Main Supply, and assign starting resources to each player based on their turn order (p. 5).

How a Turn Works

Play proceeds in a clockwise order over an undetermined number of turns (p. 5). On each of their turns, a player must choose 1 of the following three actions (p. 4):

  • Place a Die: Players place a single Die onto their own Player Board or onto previously acquired cards, using assets dictated by their Caravan and dice placement rules (p. 4, 20). Dice values can be manipulated using certain guild abilities or caravan discounts before performing the actions of that space (p. 23).
  • Place a Worker: Players place either their Yellow or Blue Worker onto cards around the edges of the Main Board, where they become a temporary public resource for all players (p. 4). Workers cannot be placed and retrieved by the same player during the same turn (p. 18).
  • Rest: If a player cannot or does not wish to place a Die or Worker, they must Rest (p. 21). Players count their remaining Dice; if they have 0 or 1 left, they activate all resting abilities from blue-bannered Townsfolk cards, then retrieve all Dice from their panorama, roll them back into their supply, and may reroll any Dice already in their supply (p. 21).

After a player finishes their turn, any empty card slots are filled by sliding remaining faceup cards in the specified direction before revealing new cards from the top of the draw piles (p. 13).

How the Game Ends

The end of the game is triggered once any player reaches 1 of the 5 final right-most spaces on the Journal Track (p. 1). After that player finishes their turn, play continues once more around the table so that all players (including the one who triggered it) take 1 final turn (p. 1).
