How to play
Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.
Here is a general overview of how to play Concordia, covering setup, turn flow, and how the game ends based on the available rules.
Game Setup
- Players are assigned a player color and receive corresponding components, including colonists, houses, a scoring marker, and a starting hand of personality cards (p. 10).
- Unused personality cards for sale are removed from the game depending on the player count (p. 1).
- The start player is randomly determined, and the last player (to the right of the start player) receives the Praefectus Magnus card (p. 1).
How a Turn Works
Players take their turns in clockwise order (p. 1).
- A player's hand consists of their unplayed personality cards (p. 1).
- On your turn, you play 1 card from your hand and execute its related actions (p. 1).
- Played cards form a personal discard pile, showing only the last card played (p. 1).
- Common personality card actions include:
- Architect: Move your colonists freely across land or sea lines, then build houses in cities adjacent to your colonists (p. 4).
- Prefect: Either trigger production in a single active province (taking its bonus and flipping its tile) or reactivate all province tiles to collect a cash bonus (p. 19).
- Mercator: Receive sestertii from the bank and trade up to two types of goods with the bank at fixed prices (p. 6).
- Tribune: Take back all your previously played personality cards into your hand, gaining 1 sestertius for each card taken in excess of 3 (p. 1, 17). Playing this for the first time triggers a personal intermediate scoring (p. 2).
- Diplomat: Copy and execute the action of a personality card currently on top of an opponent's discard pile (p. 6).
- Senator or Consul: Purchase new personality cards from the display on the game board and add them to your hand (p. 6, 7).
How the Game Ends
- The game ends either after a player purchases the last card from the display on the board, or after the first player builds their 15th house (p. 1).
- The player who triggers the end receives the Concordia card, which is worth 7 additional victory points (p. 2).
- Every other player executes their final turn, and then all players tally their final victory points (p. 1, 2).
- The player with the most victory points wins the game (p. 2).
