How to play

Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.

Here is a general overview of how to play the game:

Setup

  • Lay out the board in the middle of the table (such as the Scotland side) (p. 2). Create the deck of Mission Cards by shuffling them and placing them face-down on the designated spot on the board (p. 2).
  • Each player chooses a color, places their scoring counter on the 0 space of the perimeter score track, and takes their Clan board, Cathedrals, Castles, scoring achievement, scoring counter, and tiles (p. 2, 9).
  • Each player places their tiles face-down and shuffles them (p. 9). Depending on the player count, certain tiles may be returned to the box, and remaining tiles form each player's supply (p. 2, 9). Each player also draws initial tiles to their hand or Clan board as specified by the rules (p. 9, 10).
  • The player who last visited Scotland (or Ireland, depending on the map version being played) starts the game, and play proceeds clockwise (p. 1, 2).

How a Turn Works At the start of your turn, you become the active player (p. 1). On your turn, you always do 3 things in the following order:

  • Place the Tile: Place the tile from your hand face-up on an unoccupied space on the board that matches the symbol on the tile (p. 1, 5). You must follow the placement rules for Food Farms, Energy Farms, and Settlements (p. 1).
  • Score the Tile: Calculate the points you earn from placing that tile and immediately move your scoring counter along the score track (p. 1, 18). Tiles score points through methods such as Small, Medium, and Large Settlements, Energy Farm clusters, and Food Farm clusters (p. 3, 18). During this step, you also check if you have completed any missions (p. 1).
  • Draw Tiles: Conclude your turn by drawing 1 tile from your supply into your hand and looking at it privately to use on your next turn (p. 3). The next player in clockwise order then takes their turn (p. 3).

How the Game Ends The game ends when every player has placed all of their tiles from their supply onto the board (p. 1, 3). Players then compare scores from final scoring sources to determine the winner (p. 1, 3).
