How to play
Setup, how a turn works and how the game ends, summarised from the rulebook by Eko, Meepzy's rules assistant.
Here is an overview of how to set up, play, and end the game.
Game Setup
At the start of the game, players receive their player mats and components (p. 9).
- Start with your choice of 4 cards (chosen from 3 dragons and 3 caves) and any 3 resources (p. 13).
- Place your starting egg on 1 of the 2 nest icons on your player mat (p. 9).
- Place your adventurer in Base Camp on your player mat, your guild token on the Dragon Guild "START" space, and your remaining markers, dragons, and cave cards nearby (p. 9).
How a Turn Works
The game takes place over 4 rounds (p. 13, 17). On each turn during a round, you take 1 of the following actions by spending coins and often eggs (p. 6, 17, 22):
- Excavate: Play a cave card into the leftmost empty space in 1 of your 3 caves, providing an immediate benefit and a space to hold a dragon (p. 1, 5, 17).
- Entice: Play a dragon card from your hand into the leftmost excavated space in 1 cave (p. 1, 5, 17).
- Explore: Choose to explore your Crimson Cavern, your Golden Grotto, or your Amethyst Abyss, moving your adventurer from left to right and activating all corresponding abilities until you reach the end of the cave or an empty space (p. 1, 7, 15).
At the end of each turn, you must discard down to 9 total cards, 9 coins, and 9 resource tokens (p. 4, 14). Play proceeds clockwise until players pass (p. 6, 17). At the end of each round, players perform upkeep which includes gaining 6 coins and 1 egg, refreshing the card display, activating "once per round" abilities, and scoring the round's objective (p. 6, 14, 18).
How the Game Ends
The game ends after 4 rounds (p. 13, 17). At the end of the game, players add up their victory points (VP) from the following categories (p. 15):
- Markers on the Dragon Guild aligned with End Game scoring benefits
- Printed VP values on visible dragons on your player mat
- End Game abilities on visible dragons on your player mat
- Eggs (1 per egg)
- Cached resources (1 per cached resource)
- Tucked cards (1 per tucked dragon)
- Public objectives
- Excess items and coins (1 per remaining coin, and 1 for every 4 other remaining items combined, rounding down)
The player with the most VP wins (p. 15). If there is a tie, the player with the most visible dragons on their player mat wins, and if still tied, the victory is shared (p. 15).
